History

We've been providing innovative services since 1973. From an initial narrow focus we've moved on to lead the way in lots of different areas and over the years evolved our identity and structure.

Our roots are in Edinvar Housing Association and Edinvar Community Care. We became Places for People Scotland Care & Support in 2006. You can find out more on our organisational development by downloading our pioneering work factsheet (pdf 65.3 kb).

A history of innovation

We've notched up an impressive list of firsts including:

  • Commissioning Scotland's first mainstream barrier-free housing
  • Developing in partnership with another association an innovative day care centre - the first of its kind in Scotland
  • Organising a major European conference, Beyond Barrier Free: New Technology as an Aid to Independent Living and delivering the UK's first SMART home
  • Developing Scotland's first purpose-built shared housing for single people
  • Pioneering a care housing service to provide disabled people with control over their support
  • Promoting person-centred planning in Scotland in partnership with four other organisations with funding from the Scottish Office
  • Creating a social care academy - the first of its kind to be managed by a care and support provider
  • Creating a zombie film - written, filmed and acted by service users.
